Author's notes: Happy Holidays from your secret Santa! I hope you enjoy this, Alex.

He wasn't sure when it had started, but once his mind began gnawing at him it wouldn't let up for an instant. Faramir's thoughts became increasingly more chaotic as the over-active imagination he had been cursed with conjured up enough what ifs and but onlys to last a lifetime and beyond.

The only thought that remained constant was this. His lover was keeping something very significant from him. He had started to become suspicious when the letters they had been exchanging became shorter and shorter. Then, they came with less frequency. The final straw had come, though, when his lover had written just last week regretfully to say that he would not be able to join Faramir for the Yule celebrations, even though they had been planning and looking forward to them for months.

He rose from his bed; sternly telling himself to stop thinking about it. He would need his wits today of all days. His king and his father would need his help drafting a treaty with Umbar. The Umbarians could be tricky folk--loopholes in contracts were one of their many devious specialties--so he would need to keep on task or risk his father's wrath and the impatient disappointment of the king.

He wished Boromir had come back the previous evening. His older brother was very good at distracting him from his maudlin thoughts. He usually could come up with a few outrageous stories, or a way to pass the time that didn't include much downtime which would allow his mind to get going, but he had yet to return from his patrol at Osgiliath. In fact, he wasn't supposed to be back for another week.

He forced himself to keep his mind on the treaty throughout breakfast and most of the morning. And then, his lover came through the door of the chamber where he and his father and the King were examining the proposals being put forth by the Umbarian ambassador. All of his careful self-discipline buckled before the face of this man whom he loved. He would not be able to keep his mind on this treaty for much longer, he realized. As if the king had looked into his soul, he spoke softly.

"Let us return to this later," Aragorn said. "We can think it over as we eat lunch and come back to it in two hours with fresher minds. Denethor, would you join me and Arwen?"

The Steward of Gondor nodded, gave his son a sidelong glance, and headed for the door in the king's wake. Faramir and his lover were finally alone.

"Did you ride here all the way from Rohan?" he asked quietly.

Éomer nodded and smiled. "I knew that you wanted to see me, so since I had the time, I decided to find out what was going on here. We need to talk, my love," he added seriously.

Faramir felt his head beginning to throb as his heartbeat picked up speed. Was Éomer about to tell him that their affair was over? Was he about to confess to having another lover in Rohan?

"Easy now, love," Éomer said suddenly. "Everything is all right. I'm not hurt or anything like that. I've just been... Well... I've been keeping something from you."

"Oh," Faramir murmured dully. "I... I understand. You do not have to say anything else."

Éomer frowned. "What do you understand?" he asked.

"You did not have to come all the way here just to tell me that you have another lover," Faramir replied. "A letter would have probably been..."

But before he could continue, Éomer grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around. Then, he kissed him. The kiss was long and slow. Faramir felt his lover's tongue enter his mouth and begin to explore it thoroughly for several moments. He moaned, but the sound was muffled by the press of Éomer's lips against his. After what felt like an eternity but was probably only a few seconds, Faramir stepped back and stared at his lover in surprise. Éomer just grinned back.

"Now what nonsense were you saying?" Éomer demanded.

Faramir blinked, and then forced himself to gather his scattered wits. Before he could answer him, however, Éomer spoke once more. His tone was no longer filled with the teasing amusement he'd used earlier.

"I did not come here to tell you any such thing," he asserted. "I am so sorry if that thought tormented you, my dear one. It simply is not so, however. The thing I have been keeping from you has to do with us, but it is nothing bad. At least, I hope you won't think it bad."

"W-What is it, then?" Faramir breathed.

"Well, you know that Gondor and Rohan have been working towards an alliance that would bind us closer to one another, I'm sure. Knowing you as well as I do, it occurred to me that you were worried about that alliance being one of marriage. It has turned out to be just that, but I am not to be the groom. That position of honor is going to be going to your older brother. He and my sister have been meeting for months with representatives of your kingdom and mine. They've finally decided on a marriage contract. That's part of the reason I'm here. King Théodin has sent me to deliver the good news. Boromir has asked, and Éowyn has said yes. They are to be married within the next twelve months. Then last night, I got the news that Lothiriel and Théodred are also thinking about getting married. So Rohan and Gondor do not need us to create marriages outside of our union. Since that is the case, I came here to ask if you would marry me."

"You... I... This is why you've been gone for so long? This is why you couldn't come to me during Meterë? You've been preparing and planning for this since then?"

Éomer nodded. "I hope you won't be too angry with me for too long, my love," he added.

"Angry with you? You think I am angry with you? Of course I'm not angry! I am so... so very relieved!"

The door opened suddenly, and Aragorn and Denethor stood there laughing delightedly. Boromir's great booming laugh could be heard from further down the hall. Faramir spun around and stared at his father and his king in complete astonishment. He could not think of anything to say or do.

When Aragorn finally stopped laughing, he spoke in an amused drawl. "You haven't answered his question, Faramir," he said. "I believe he wanted to know if you would marry him."

"Yes, Éomer, my love! Oh, yes I'll marry you!" Faramir cried joyfully.

A cheer went up from the doorway as he and his soon-to-be husband kissed fervently.

It does this angst-free heart good to have Boromir and Theodred both still around in any fic. *g* I think you show Faramir's shift in emotions really well.

This is charming! filled with the very human hopes and fears and wild imaginings that love can torture us with. At least your Faramir need never fear to lose his love's faith again...although a little bit of me is very sympathetic...Eomer could at least have kept up the letters! Thankyou for a lovely Secret Santa gift. I hope that you and your have a wonderful and peaceful Holiday and a prosperous New Year!
