The Act of Trusting
By Leianora

"Frodo?"

Merry's shout had the desired effect. His older cousin came running out of the room where he'd been studying all day. Looking more than a little upset, the younger hobbit grabbed Frodo Baggins by the hand and raced down the hall; dragging him along behind him.

"What in the Shire is the matter with you?" Frodo demanded as he struggled to keep up with his running cousin.

"I have to show you! You won't believe it!"

Frodo said nothing more; knowing that no amount of begging, demanding, or wheedling would make Merry tell him anything until he was good and ready to do so.

They finally stopped running when they reached the same porch where they'd had their counsel three days earlier. Frodo could do nothing but stare. Dimly, he realized that Merry had been right. If he had tried to explain to Frodo what he was seeing now, he would not have believed him.

Pippin stood balancing on the limb of a tree far above them. Below him, Aragorn stood, hands raised and eyes trained on the dangerously swaying little hobbit. Frodo wanted to yell; to demand of his cousin why he'd climbed the tree and what he thought he was doing, but the only sound that he could make was a tiny whimper. He could barely breathe.

"I told you you wouldn't have believed me," Merry whispered harshly; bringing Frodo out of his state of shock and causing him to focus on the others who were around him.

Boromir sat idly; gazing at the scene with a small smile. Gimli was openly worried. Legolas was as calm as ever as he perched in the tree right beside the one Pippin was currently trying to climb.

"Good, now slowly make your way to the end of the limb," Legolas was saying... But those were the words that propelled Frodo into action.

"Peregrin Took! Don't you dare!" he screamed.

"But..." Pippin began.

"I! Said! No!" Frodo yelled. "Come down here immediately!"

Dead silence filled the small courtyard where the fellowship sat or stood. Everyone was staring at Frodo as if he'd grown an extra head. He ignored the reactions of the others and bolted from his position on the top step of the porch towards the spot where Aragorn still stood.

Looking more than a little ashamed, Pippin climbed down and landed in Aragorn's arms. Gently, the man lowered him to the ground, and then turned to face Pippin's irate older cousin.

"What in the name of the Valar were you thinking?" Frodo demanded of his youngest cousin. "And don't you dare tell me that you thought it would be all right because Strider was standing here ready to catch you! You know you aren't supposed to climb trees after what happened the last time!"

"Frodo, I was..." Aragorn began, but one look from the hobbit silenced him.

"I don't believe you!" Frodo shouted at Pippin. "Are we all to come under the healing care of Lord Elrond before we can leave to go where we need to go?" he demanded.

Everyone heard the fear in his voice, and suddenly, none of them could look at him. They were all too filled with chagrin to do more than wince and stay quiet.

"I can't... I don't believe you did..."

His eyes filled with tears and he spun around, raced back into the house and up to the room he'd been given upon his arrival nearly a week earlier.

"Why'd you go and tell him? Pippin demanded of Merry.

"You know why," Merry replied. "Pip, you really could have fallen again. You remember how dizzy you got the last time you did that, don't you?"

"I was ready and able to catch him," Aragorn said; looking slightly offended by this implicit lack of trust on Frodo's part. He wondered when Frodo would feel safe around him.

"Pippin kicks in panic when he falls," Merry said soberly. "That would have made him fall outwards, not straight down. You could have missed. Oh... I'm not blaming you for trying, in fact, I'm rather grateful, but... Frodo is... Well, he's still scared after the last time."

"What happened the last time?" Boromir asked softly.

"It was about a year ago," Merry began. "Pip had come to Brandy Hall to stay with me for the summer. Cousin Frodo just happened to show up on the second day, and Pip said that he wanted to show us both something he'd learned how to do. When he reached the top of the huge oak tree he decided to climb, he made the large mistake of looking down to see how we were reacting."

"Ah," Aragorn murmured; guessing what had happened next. "He fell, did he not?"

Merry nodded and shuddered. "I... I tried to catch him; and so did Frodo, but we both missed. He hit the ground so hard that he broke lots of bones and... we couldn't get him to wake up for almost three days. He still gets a bit dizzy and has headaches after that."

"Why did you not tell us this?" Aragorn asked Pippin.

"I. I didn't think it would matter. I'm fine! Besides, if I'm to go with Frodo, who knows what I'll have to do? I have to be ready for anything! Don't you see?"

"Ah... Master Pippin, my friend, you are truly incorrigible!" Legolas said gently.

"I guess I'd better find Fro and tell him I'm sorry," Pippin muttered.

"There's no need," said a soft voice from very close by.

Pippin spun around and raced to throw himself into his oldest cousin's arms. "I really am sorry," he said almost plaintively. "Can you forgive me for scaring you like that?"

"Oh... Pip, whatever shall I do with you? I suppose that's a better question to be asking than what I would be forced to do without you," he added almost to himself.

"I'm sure you'd find something to do," Pippin said, his impish attitude fully restored by Frodo's hug.

"Frodo laughed and squeezed his cousin a little tighter. "I'm sorry I shouted at you like that. You scared me, but that's no excuse for me to act like a complete troll."

Pippin hid his face in his cousin's cloak and snickered a little. "Oh... That's okay. At least I know you got mad because you love me. I love you too, by the way."

Frodo gave him a gentle push. "Go inside, you rogue.

Pippin laughed and ran off, Merry following in his wake with a smile and a shake of his head. Slowly, the others made to follow him. Before Aragorn could do more than take a few steps, however, Frodo called to him. He looked down at the hobbit impassively.

"I owe you an apology," Frodo said gravely. "My actions shouted a feeling of distrust, but I haven't felt such things since the first night we met. I'm sorry I yelled at you, too.

Aragorn smiled. Frodo's blue eyes were full of such sincerity and regret that he couldn't help feeling a warm fondness for the hobbit.

"I appreciate your apology," he replied with equal gravity. "I accept it."

Frodo nodded his thanks, and then turned to follow his cousins into the house. Aragorn strode up to walk alongside him. They parted ways just before they reached the Hall of Fire, but though neither of them spoke again, the tension that had been obvious during the last half hour or so was gone.

Thank you so very much! This was just adorable. I enjoyed every word of it. I am very fond of Pippin and this story made me recall why. I love hoq he runs through all of the emotions in the space of this tale. He is daring, bold, frightened, embarrassed, cheeky, and as ever, light-hearted. Frodo was very well written too. Thank you for a delightful story. You have made this exchange lots of fun for me and I thank you. Have a very happy, hobbity, holiday season.

This is a story very true to the characters of our Hobbits.
Pippin ready to storm head first into an adventure without thinking of the consequences and Frodo more mature but overly worried.
Lovely story. Thank you for sharing.

You can't keep a good Hobbit from a tree top! And by the way, Legolas - was he trying to get Pip to go to the END of the branch! Legolas.. smack wrist!!! Yes poor Frodo has a lot of nasty things to worry about, without eeejit HObbits doing themselves mischiefs! Thank you for saving Pippin!

Good grief! It would have more to the point if Legolas had been in the 'same' tree as Pippin! A charming scene which has more layers to it than simply a reckless Hobbit and his overly-protective cousin. thankyou for letting us share.

Very sweet. I like that it's both lighthearted with a touch of bittersweet.
